Back in her own flat, it was not long – just a cup of tea a biscuit and a half-hour stand-up comedy show later – that Nancy was settling in for an early night. Having felt utterly humourless, it had been good to laugh again, though sleep was what she really needed and so she would take full advantage of the many hours ahead to catch up. Very soon she was snuggled up in the warmth of her duvet, with the temperature outside beginning to drop and in a state of abject satisfaction. Just drifting away… just drifting away… to deep, sweet and interrupted sleep.

‘What are you talking about?’

The voice was faint, almost dismissed as if something from a dream… but she stirred just a little. There was something about being in the know that just prevented her brain from switching off as it needed, regardless that she was certain she should feel no guilt over what she had done. Maybe deep down she was just not used to raining on people’s parades and some kind of misplaced guilt from the more tolerant and less exhausted corner of her psyche was trying to surface, causing her to bend her ear and listen.

‘I don’t know what you mean,’ the voice, clearly from none other than Rubens upstairs, went on. ‘No, I haven’t been up to it with anyone else… That must have been a practical joke… But I’ve taken it now, what am I supposed to…?’

There was a cut-off. The recipient at the other end of the line – who could only have been hi-pitch Lil herself – had clearly hung up and was having none of his excuses. Though they were clearly fuckbuddies rather than star-crossed lovers, it was clear that even a shagpiece like that was uncomfortable with the idea of being second best.

The ruse had worked a real treat and, even if Lover Boy suspected his most recent source of complaint had something to do with it, Nancy was not wholly convinced he was either sharp or confident enough to be certain. Not that there was anything he could do about it anyway – she had every right to intervene in order to safeguard her own sanity.

All the same, it must have taken her a good hour to switch off completely from the hanging air of discontent she sensed coming from upstairs. When at last Nancy did, she was helped by the setting sun outside, helping her brain to forget the stress of the day and embrace unconsciousness. She could feel bliss coming, knowing it would be deep and satisfying, as nourishment to starving lips. A shutting down of all senses until the alarm clock was rude enough to awaken her. For whatever reason, though she did not know it, hearing was the last of these to give up its alertness and, though she had started to dream of handsome mermen stroking her hair and singing her to sleep, one of those mermen’s faces would suddenly turn into a giant dildo and she woke up again realising she had heard something.
